This is a working overview of research chemical, written for readers who want more than a one-paragraph summary but less than a textbook.
This page was last updated on 2025-08-04 and is reviewed periodically as new material appears.
The seven-residue chain carries several polar and charged side chains, so it dissolves readily in water and in aqueous buffers near neutral pH. No cysteine is present, so disulphide formation is not a concern and reducing agents are unnecessary. Dilute ammonium hydroxide or acetonitrile-water mixtures are sometimes used for stock solutions when initial dissolution is slow. Strongly alkaline conditions and prolonged contact with oxidising agents are avoided because they can modify lysine-containing stretches, and haze in solution usually signals incomplete dissolution or aggregated material.
Identity and purity are checked with reversed-phase high-performance liquid chromatography, which separates the target sequence from truncated or deletion analogues, and with mass spectrometry, which confirms the expected molecular mass. Amino acid analysis and peptide mapping give orthogonal confirmation but are used less often outside specialist laboratories. Counter-ion content varies: material purified on trifluoroacetic acid gradients retains trifluoroacetate, and ion exchange can convert the salt form. Residual water and solvent are measured by Karl Fischer titration or thermogravimetric analysis, and any purity figure should be read together with the method used to obtain it.
Lyophilised peptide powders are hygroscopic, and the fragment absorbs atmospheric moisture when a vial is opened at room temperature. Weighing and aliquoting are normally done quickly in a dry environment, and stock solutions are divided into single-use portions before freezing. Repeated freeze-thaw cycles are avoided because they promote aggregation and can shift the measured content of a vial. These practices are general to synthetic peptides rather than unique to this sequence, but they matter more for short chains kept for long periods.
The compound is most often distributed as a lyophilized powder, appearing white to off-white and forming a loose cake or fluffy solid. It is hygroscopic to some degree, so brief exposure to humid air can add water weight and complicate weighing. The peptide dissolves readily in water and in neutral aqueous buffers, and aqueous solubility is generally described as high, well above the concentrations used in typical assays. Some polar organic solvents are also usable, which matters when a concentrated stock is prepared before dilution into buffer.
Storage recommendations center on keeping the dry powder cold, dry, and dark. A freezer at -20 degrees Celsius or below is conventional, and desiccant is often included to limit moisture uptake. Once dissolved, the peptide is less stable, and solutions are typically kept frozen and thawed only once. Repeated freeze-thaw cycles are a common source of losses because they promote aggregation and adsorption to container surfaces. Working aliquots are therefore prepared in advance, and glass or low-binding plastic is usually preferred over ordinary laboratory plastic.
Identity and purity are assessed with a small set of standard techniques. Reverse-phase high-performance liquid chromatography gives a purity estimate from peak area, usually recorded at 214 or 220 nanometers, where the peptide bond absorbs. Mass spectrometry confirms the expected molecular mass and can reveal truncated or oxidized species. Amino acid analysis or tandem mass spectrometry sequencing can verify the sequence itself. Additional quality attributes include water content, residual trifluoroacetic acid carried over from purification, and endotoxin where the material is intended for biological work.
| Property | Value | Notes |
|---|---|---|
| Water content | Low in freshly lyophilised material | Rises after repeated opening of the same vial |
| Solution stability | Lower than powder stability | Frozen aliquots are preferred over repeated thawing |
| Purity assessment | Reversed-phase HPLC with UV detection | Peak-area percentage excludes salts and water |
| Salt form | Often the trifluoroacetate salt | Retained from acidic purification gradients |
| Light sensitivity | Not strongly photoreactive | Dark storage still advised for long-term keeping |
Peptide bonds are susceptible to hydrolysis under extreme pH and to enzymatic cleavage if proteases are present. Heat, oxidising agents, and prolonged exposure to light also contribute to loss of material. Aggregation can occur at high concentrations or in certain buffer systems, and it may not be visible to the eye. Storage at -20 C or below is typical for both powder and aliquoted solutions, and desiccation of the powder is preferred.
Identity and purity are usually assessed by reversed-phase high-performance liquid chromatography together with mass spectrometry. The chromatogram provides a purity estimate as a percentage of total peak area, while the mass spectrum confirms that the observed mass matches the expected value. Amino acid analysis or tandem mass spectrometry sequencing can provide additional confirmation. Reported purity figures depend on the column, gradient, and detection wavelength, so values from different laboratories are not directly comparable without method details.
Lyophilised peptide is normally reconstituted with sterile water or a neutral buffer shortly before use. Because repeated freeze-thaw cycles can degrade the material, dividing a reconstituted solution into single-use aliquots is a common practice. Working solutions are usually kept cold and protected from light. The exact shelf life depends on concentration, buffer composition, and handling, so it is often determined empirically rather than assumed.
The regulatory position is broadly consistent across major jurisdictions: no thymosin beta-4 fragment is an approved medicine, and laboratory material is commonly labelled as not intended for human consumption. Anti-doping rules in sport list thymosin beta-4 and its fragments among prohibited peptide hormones. Because these products travel through research-chemical channels rather than pharmaceutical supply chains, quality varies considerably between vendors. Independent testing of identity, purity and sterility is the only dependable check, and a certificate of analysis describes one batch rather than a supplier's whole catalogue.
Lyophilized peptide powder is normally held desiccated at −20 °C, with −80 °C used for longer storage periods. Allowing a sealed vial to reach room temperature before opening is standard practice, because condensation forming on cold powder introduces moisture. Once dissolved, solutions are typically kept cold and shielded from light. Repeated freeze-thaw cycles are avoided because they encourage aggregation and gradual loss of material. These conventions are general to synthetic peptides rather than unique to any one sequence.
Purity and identity are separate measurements and are often confused. Reverse-phase high-performance liquid chromatography, usually with ultraviolet detection near 214 nanometres, reports the share of total peak area belonging to the target compound. Mass spectrometry by electrospray or matrix-assisted laser desorption then checks whether the observed mass matches the expected sequence. Neither measurement alone shows that a vial holds the intended peptide. Peptide content, meaning the fraction of vial mass that is genuine peptide rather than counter-ion, water or residual acid, is reported separately and is frequently lower than the stated purity figure.
Thymosin beta-4 was isolated from calf thymus in the early 1980s and later characterised as an abundant intracellular actin-sequestering protein. Interest in short synthetic fragments grew once the actin-binding motif had been mapped to the middle of the sequence. TB-500 came out of that line of work as a truncated analogue rather than a natural isolate, and it is now sold mainly to laboratories. Published studies on the fragment have been largely in vitro or in animal models, and controlled human trials remain sparse, so claims about effects in people rest on extrapolation.
Literature and online discussion often conflate TB-500 with full-length thymosin beta-4, even though the two differ in size and are not interchangeable in analytical terms. The fragment is produced by solid-phase peptide synthesis, and the product is a defined seven-residue chain rather than a biological extract. Because the term is a trade-style label, two vendors may supply materials of the same nominal sequence but different counter-ion content, purity, or water content. Comparisons across studies are therefore difficult unless the exact sequence and purity are reported.
=== Broadcasting years 1945–1949 === Although Thomas had previously written for the BBC, it was a minor and intermittent source of income. In 1943, he wrote and recorded a 15-minute talk titled "Reminiscences of Childhood" for the Welsh BBC. In December 1944, he recorded Quite Early One Morning (produced by Aneirin Talfan Davies, again for the Welsh BBC) but when Davies offered it for national broadcast BBC London turned it down. On 31 August 1945, the BBC Home Service broadcast Quite Early One Morning and, in the three years beginning in October 1945, Thomas made over a hundred broadcasts for the corporation. Thomas was employed not only for his poetry readings, but for discussions and critiques.
== History == The company was founded in Bremen on 24 October 1923 as Bremer Flugzeugbau AG by Prof. Henrich Focke, Georg Wulf and Dr. rer. pol. Werner Naumann. Almost immediately, they renamed the company Focke-Wulf Flugzeugbau AG (later Focke-Wulf Flugzeugbau GmbH). Focke-Wulf merged, under government pressure, with Albatros Flugzeugwerke of Berlin in 1931. The Albatros Flugzeugwerke engineer and test pilot Kurt Tank became head of the technical department and started work on the Fw 44 Stieglitz (Goldfinch). Dr Ludwig Roselius became chairman in 1925 and handed over to his brother Friedrich in early 1933. In 1938 Roselius' HAG combine increased its shareholding to 46% and C. Lorenz AG secured 28%. The company was reconstituted as Focke-Wulf Flugzeugbau GmbH and no longer had to publish its accounts. A substantial capital injection occurred at this time. In August 1933 Hans Holle and Rudolf Schubert were given power of attorney over the Berlin branch of Focke-Wulf. Then in October 1933, Focke-Wulf Flugzeugbau A.G. Albatros Berlin was officially registered with the Department of Trade. Dr Roselius always remained the driving force of Focke-Wulf. He and his closest collaborator, Barbara Goette, often met with technical director Professor Kurt Tank. When Roselius died in May 1943, Heinrich Puvogel (later chair of Focke-Wulf) raised 4 million RM and continued handling the financial affairs of Focke-Wulf as chief of Seehandel A.G. Hanna Reitsch demonstrated the Focke-Wulf Fw 61, the first fully controllable helicopter (as opposed to autogyro), in Berlin in 1938.
==== Cholestasis ==== Liver injury leads to impairment of bile flow and cases are predominated by itching and jaundice. Histology may show inflammation (cholestatic hepatitis) or it can be bland (without any parenchymal inflammation). On rare occasions, it can produce features similar to primary biliary cirrhosis due to progressive destruction of small bile ducts (vanishing duct syndrome).

=== Before 2021 === The Independent in 2008 described the Russo-Georgian War as "reviv[ing] the spectre of the most tense days of the Cold War" and described it as the beginning of a "new Cold War". In a 2016 op-ed for The Straits Times, Kor Kian Beng wrote that the phrase "new Cold War" between US-led allies versus Beijing and Moscow did not gain traction in China at first when it first emerged in 2014. He says this changed in 2016 after the United States announced its plan to deploy Terminal High Altitude Area Defense (THAAD) in South Korea against North Korea, but China and Russia found the advanced anti-missile system too close for comfort. The US also supported a tribunal ruling against China in favor of the Philippines in the South China Sea. Afterwards, he wrote, the term "new Cold War" appeared in Chinese media more often. In a June 2019 interview with a college magazine, University of Southern California (USC) professors Steven Lamy and Robert D. English agreed that talk of a "new Cold War" was intended to distract political publics from bigger issues such as globalisation, global warming, global poverty and increasing inequality. Lamy said there was no new Cold War ("although it serves a purpose for some people to suggest that, especially those who want to increase military budgets") but instead described the heightened global tension as a period of great power rivalry between the US, China and Russia.
== Production == Royal jelly is secreted from the glands in the heads of worker bees and is fed to all bee larvae, whether they are destined to become drones (males), workers (sterile females), or queens (fertile females). After three days, the drone and worker larvae are no longer fed with royal jelly, but queen larvae continue to be fed this special substance throughout their development.

Hydrometallurgy is a technique within the field of extractive metallurgy, the obtaining of metals from their ores. Hydrometallurgy uses solutions to recover metals from ores, concentrates, and recycled or residual materials. Usually the extracting solution is aqueous (water-based), often containing additives such as acids. In select cases, the extracting solvent is nonaqueous. Processing techniques that complement hydrometallurgy are pyrometallurgy, vapour metallurgy, and molten salt electrometallurgy. Hydrometallurgy is typically divided into three general areas:

Sea lilies and feather stars: ligaments connecting ossicles of arms, stalks and cirri. Starfish: body-wall dermis; walls of tube feet. Brittle stars: intervertebral ligaments; autotomy tendons of arm muscles. Sea urchins: ligaments or catch apparatus, connecting spines to tests of sea urchins; tooth ligaments; compass depressor "muscles", which are in fact mostly made of connective tissues. Sea cucumbers: body-wall dermis. Early echinoderms were sessile organisms that fed on suspended particles carried by water currents. Their body was covered with imbricate small skeletal plates. The arrangement of plates suggests that plates worked as sliding joints so as animals to be able to change their body shape: they could possibly take an extended feeding posture and a flat "hiding" posture. The body plates might be connected with catch connective tissue that allowed early echinoderms such postural changes.
==== DEA scheduling ==== In August 2016, the Drug Enforcement Administration (DEA) announced its intention to place the active materials in the kratom plant into Schedule I of the Controlled Substances Act as a warning about an imminent hazard to public safety, citing over 600 calls to poison control centers between 2010 and 2015, and 15 kratom-related deaths between 2014 and 2016. This drew strong protests among those using kratom to deal with chronic pain or wean themselves off opioids or alcohol. A group of 51 members of the U.S. House of Representatives and a group of nine Senators each sent letters to acting DEA administrator Chuck Rosenberg protesting the listing. Around 140,000 people signed an online White House Petition protesting it. The DEA noted the responses but said that it intended to go forward with the listing; a spokesman said: "We can't rely upon public opinion and anecdotal evidence. We have to rely upon science." In October 2016, the DEA withdrew its notice of intent while inviting public comments over a review period ending in December 2016. As of July 2016, Alabama, Arkansas, Indiana, Vermont, and Wisconsin had made kratom illegal, and the US Army had forbidden soldiers from using it. Between February 2014 and July 2016, U.S. law-enforcement authorities "encountered 55 tons of kratom," or roughly "50 million individual doses," according to the International Narcotics Control Board.
== Dietary requirements == The Food and Nutrition Board (FNB) of the U.S. Institute of Medicine set Recommended Dietary Allowances (RDAs) for essential amino acids in 2002. For leucine, for adults 19 years and older, 42 mg/kg body weight/day; for isoleucine 19 mg/kg body weight/day; for valine 24 mg/kg body weight/day. For a 70 kg (154 lb) person this equates to 2.9, 1.3 and 1.7 g/day. Diets that meet or exceed the RDA for total protein (0.8 g/kg/day; 56 grams for a 70 kg person), meet or exceed the RDAs for branched-chain amino acids.
In March 1996, Haftar again briefly returned to Libya to instigate an uprising against Gaddafi in the mountains of eastern Libya. The Revolutionary Committees experienced a resurgence to combat these Islamists. In 1989, Gaddafi was overjoyed by the foundation of the Arab Maghreb Union, uniting Libya in an economic pact with Mauritania, Morocco, Tunisia, and Algeria, viewing it as beginnings of a new pan-Arab union. Gaddafi was able to recover some influence in Chad after Hissène Habré was overthrown by Idriss Déby in a Libya-sponsored coup in 1990. Déby also gave Gaddafi detailed information about CIA operations in Chad. Meanwhile, Libya stepped up its support for anti-Western militants such as the Provisional IRA, and in 1988, Pan Am Flight 103 was blown up over Lockerbie in Scotland, killing 243 passengers and 16 crew members, plus 11 people on the ground. British police investigations identified two Libyans – Abdelbaset al-Megrahi and Lamin Khalifah Fhimah – as the chief suspects, and in November 1991 issued a declaration demanding that Libya hand them over. When Gaddafi refused, citing the Montreal Convention, the United Nations (UN) imposed Resolution 748 in March 1992, initiating economic sanctions against Libya which had deep repercussions for the country's economy. The country suffered an estimated US$900 million financial loss as a result. On 5 November 1995, US President Bill Clinton declared the US would continue to induce pressure on Libya, also recognizing that Libyan terrorists were responsible for the Lockerbie bombing.
This obstacle is overcome by using a back-pressure regulator exhaust valve, which opens the exhaust valve by using the leverage of a diaphragm sensing the pressure difference between the helmet interior pressure and the ambient pressure, This only requires the pressure in the reclaim hose to be lower than ambient at the diver to function. The same principle is used in a diving chamber's built-in breathing system (BIBS).

Divide it into single-use aliquots and hold them frozen at -20 °C or below, protected from light. Repeated thawing of one container is the main avoidable source of variability.
Mass spectrometry confirms identity, because the measured mass is compared with the value expected from the sequence. Chromatography mainly reports how much of the material elutes as the target peak.
It usually describes the share of the chromatographic peak area recorded at a set wavelength. Salts, residual water, and solvent are excluded from that number, so it is not the same as mass fraction.
Short transit at ambient temperature is generally tolerated, but long-term storage at room temperature is not recommended. Heat, moisture, and light all accelerate degradation. Cold, dry, dark storage is the conventional choice.
